Import FAQs
General FAQs
How does the import process work?
The process involves several key steps: finding and purchasing a vehicle from a Japanese auction or dealer, arranging for sea freight to the UK, clearing customs, paying all taxes and duties, completing any necessary modifications for UK roads, and finally, registering the vehicle with the DVLA.
How long does the whole process take?
Depending how quickly we find a vehicle to meet your specifications, will depend on the whole process. Upon being successful finding your dream vehicle, it will take up to 1 month to book onto a vehicle carrier ship, the crossing takes approximately 2 months (can be slightly longer or shorter depending on weather). Then the vehicle has to be picked up within 5 days of landing in the UK from the port.
What documents do I need to import a vehicle?
The essential documents include the Japanese Export Certificate (with an English translation), the Bill of Lading from the shipping company, and the commercial invoice or proof of purchase. We will guide you on all required paperwork.
Costings
How much does it cost to import a vehicle?
The cost is mainly down to the price of the vehicle you are importing. Whatever your budget is, we will be realistic in whether that is achievable and source the vehicle within that budget. There are 4 different packages available depending on what level of service you want.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Only after your consultation and you have decided to go ahead will a deposit be required. The deposit includes £75 of our services, as well as £800 for a deposit on the vehicle - total deposit £875. This deposit will contribute to final cost of the vehicle.
Do I have to pay it all upfront?
No, after the consultation, you will have 14 days to pay the deposit (after receiving the deposit, we will start our formal search to find your dream vehicle). Upon securing your vehicle, you will then be requested to pay the main bulk of the payment that includes the vehicle itself, shipping and marine insurance. Once your vehicle lands (about 2-3 months later), the remaining balance will be requested; you are more than welcome to make the final payment earlier or in smaller instalments. You will not be allowed to collect your vehicle until the full balance has been paid.
UK Regulations & Compliance
What modifications are required for a Japanese import to be road legal in the UK?
The main modifications are converting the speedometer from kilometres per hour (km/h) to miles per hour (mph) and fitting a rear fog light, as Japanese cars do not come with one as standard.
Does the car need to be inspected in the UK?
Yes. All imported vehicles must pass either an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test or a standard MOT test. Cars over 10 years old typically only need an MOT, while newer cars require an IVA test to prove they meet UK safety and environmental standards.
Registration & Driving
How do I get my vehicle registered with the DVLA?
Before you can register, you must notify HMRC of the car's arrival through the NOVA system and pay all taxes. You then submit a V55/5 application form to the DVLA with all required documents, including the import certificate, MOT/IVA certificate, and proof of address.
When can I get UK number plates for my car?
You can get number plates made up once the DVLA has successfully registered your vehicle and issued a UK registration number. This typically happens after they process your V55/5 application and you receive your V5C logbook.
